We are rested and ready ....

It is Wednesday evening and the plan we set forth this morning served us well.  We set out this morning for our own walking tour, checking out the streets/shops that we didn't visit yesterday.  We found tomorrows designated meeting spot, Hotel Albetros.  We decided we needed another cup of "good" coffee before we made our way to the ATM.  Our tab was $40.....uh,oh, only have $39.00.  Helps when you play the stupid tourist....we got on our way to find the ATM.

Today is payday in Ushuaia which much like pension day at home is a very busy bank day.  The line-ups were long and the security guards standing at the door controlling traffic.  To add to the excitement, the ATM run out of cash and the Argentina version of Brinks arrived at the door to replenish the supply.  We met a couple of english speaking ladies from Vancouver and the security guard also spoke english.  He was from Morocco and french, his first language.  I think he liked me, he asked my name and told me I had beautiful eyes.  I blushed followed by "thank-you", "merci" and finally "gracias".  With a little patience,we got our pesos and were on our way.

We stopped at a sandwich shop and picked up chicken subs for lunch back in our room.  They must like hard boiled eggs.  In Buenos Aires, I was asked if I wanted egg on my salad.  Today, sliced eggs on our chicken subs.

The Spa was next.  The pool was wonderfully warm and the hot tub hotter but not too hot!  Mom and I had the whole place to ourselves....aaaauuuhhhh!

After a round of charades with the housekeeping for towels and tea bags, it was time to make a supper plan.  The shops are open until 8pm and the restaurantes don't open until 8pm.  Now for the Google, Trip Advisor search for the perfect place to eat.  What I found was Restaurante Volver....close with good reviews and much to our surprise it was just around the corner, in our own back yard so to speak.  We look into their backyard from our hotel room.  They also open at 7:30 which was also in their favor.  Google maps warned us about the possibility of broken or missing walking paths with their directions...lol. They were right!  Volver's didn't disappoint though Mom was leary  You cannot judge a book by it's cover (or its backyard).  Again, the language was a barrier.  Some spanish would come be an asset.  I still wonder how they listen to english music and yet have very little knowledge of the language.  Tom Jones is a very popular fellow here.
Now we are settling in for our last night of sleep on land.  Tomorrow is breakfast, check-out at 10, leaving our luggage at the front desk to be picked up by One Ocean Expeditions. We will meet our group at 3:30 pm and embark the Akademik Ioffe for the 11 day/10 night Royal Canadian Geographic Antarctic Peninsula Adventure.
I don't know what wireless connections might be available in the days ahead.  I will update you as I am able....just remember "No news is good news"!  We will be fine.

  1. How fascinating! I can picture you two gadding about that foreign town; going to have to Google Map it so I can see the streets, also. Hope you're taking lots of pictures! $40.00 for two cups of coffee.....hope the Argentine "dollar" is worth less than ours, haha! Thanks so much for sharing so that we can follow along. Great blog. Happy sailing! from Ken and Deb
